Abstract

The political, economic and strategic effects of the collapse of the Soviet Union had a strong impact on partner or friendly countries. Algeria had strong ties with the USSR, the big anti-imperialist brother. It had participated very actively in the construction of a NIS, the New International Economic Order. As a result, its ties with Western countries, particularly France, had deteriorated. The Algerian state, which had broken away from the colonial system, had planned its economy, but Soviet aid had proved insufficient to compensate for the deterioration of its trade and international relations with Western countries. With the disappearance of the USSR, the Algerian economy lost its bearings, nowhere between socialism and liberalism. The economic situation has clearly deteriorated and oil, the only export value, the tree that hides the forest, is not in a position to commit Algeria to a process of sustainable economic development.
