Abstract

One part of the literature on the economics of groundwater management is concerned with mathematic models that represent the inefficiencies of a private extraction of groundwater resources. Their main aim is to isolate some economic phenomena that are at work during such an extraction in order to better understand and quantify them; the final aim is to correct the inefficiencies in an efficient way. The problem of this approach is that many restrictive assumptions are needed to be made. The aim of our work is to explain the assumptions made in such works that are based on mathematic models. In order to do so, we propose to distinguish between long run and short run effects. This distinction allows us to bring to the fore that, despite the fact that the literature about the economics of groundwater is full of dynamic models, their contribution is very limited with respect to the one of static representations.
