Abstract

If competitive intelligence can be considered with Colletis [5] as a cognitive capacity of the company, its operational implementation must be based on concrete devices. The enterprise information system, its decision-making function, and its environmental representation component, can examples of these devices. How to design such systems?Several fields, and in particular computer systems engineering, have recognized the crucial importance of the needs (requirements) analysis phase. This phase is little described in the literature of competitive intelligence, and it has not so far been the subject of any structured method. We have developed a complete method (MEDESIIE method [19]) to analyse the need in competitive intelligence of managers of SMEs. This method is based on ad hoc models to describe the company, its strategy, the environment, and the competitive intelligence need of the decision-maker.This communication focuses on modelling the need for competitive intelligence. We define what is the analysis of the need for competitive intelligence and why it seems important to us, then we indicate the contributions to expect from the use of a structured method. In the third section, we expose the perspective in which we placed ourselves to carry out the modelling of the need in competitive intelligence, then we present the general structure of the model of the need in competitive intelligence as we developed it in the method.
