Abstract

This study investigates the influence of SMEs' international marketing related competences on their financial export performance during the economic recession. A longitudinal research approach was used in order to observe the evolution of the export marketing related competences and of SMEs' export performance between 2008 and 2012/2013. The results suggest that overall SMEs' level of international marketing competences before the recession is positively linked to the evolution of their export sales volume during the recession. With regard to competences' evolution during the crisis period, our study highlights that only the progression of the strategic export related competences appears to be positively correlated with SMEs' export performance.
