Abstract

Over those last years, hospitals have undertaken a multitude of stringent reforms regarding quality and risk management of care services. These reforms are the result of various factors such as the evolution of the medical demography, the technological innovations and shortage in terms of nursing staff. Thus, hospitals must adopt specific objectives and methods to improve and secure patients' journey throughout the care chain, including also high-risk activities. Inspired by practices well-developed in industry, the process approach is now becoming an effective solution, widely adopted by hospitals. Our case study deals with the management of patients, concerned with chemotherapy. This is a complex and sensitive process involving many intermediaries, both human and technological by nature. Through this article, we propose to study the case of a Regional University Hospital Center (CHU) which, confronted to those challenges, has centralized its chemotherapy manufacturing unit. Based on nineteen semi-structured interviews, our study consists of exploring and understanding the challenges of standardization and computerization to limit the risks associated with the chemotherapy treatment process.
