Abstract

The objective of this paper is to clarify theoretically the business ecosystem concept. It is based on a more general reflection on localized forms of networks and more generally on networks. We'll analyse the evolution of these different forms (mainly districts and clusters) until the emergence of the business ecosystems in the 2000s. Several models (district, cluster, value network and business ecosystem), are assessed and their key features are compared. Is there a convergence (or analogies) between these organizational systems ? Can business ecosystems be considered as "original networks" with specific features ? Are they really a new form of organization ?
