Abstract

According to greek mythlogy Europe was a phenician princess kidnapped on the shores of Asia and settled in the western peninsula of the continent. This nice story carries two symbols relevant to the history of the European Community. First there is the princess who embodies the attractive beauty or even the fascination felt bvy the founding fathers with regard to the idea of building an area of peace and freedom on the continent. But recall, the princess is phenician, and as is well known, phenicians were merchants, good merchants indeed. Here is the second symbol, may be the merchants have taken over Europe, so that the early enthousiasm is threaten by the everyday concerns about who is going to gain or lose from any action to be taken in the common policies.
