Abstract

Quand on examine comment la population active agricole française a évolué au cours des trois premiers quarts du 20è, une première constatation s'impose: le déclin est de plus en plus rapide (exception faite bien sûr des périodes de guerre). Entre l968 et 1975, date des deux derniers recensements de population, la diminution s'est faite à une vitesse qui n'avait jamais été atteinte jusque là: -5,1 % par an pour les actifs agricoles masculins, contre - 3,8 % entre 1962 et 1968 et - 3 % entre 1954 et 1962. L'accélération de la décroissance incite à se demander jusqu'où va aller la chute. Craignant un tarissement trop important de la population agricole, les pouvoirs publics et les organisations professionnelles agricoles se déclarent dorénavant favorables au maintien à la terre d'un nombre maximum de jeunes.
