Abstract

Can research on migrants be conducted with only the concepts and methods of the host universe? Haitian migrant women in Brazil were invited to share narratives of themselves in a research process aimed at contributing to their autonomy (Butler, Rago, Biroli). We became aware that this approach reproduced in a certain way what migrant women complained about and what we condemned: self-serving aid, sideration, control, lack of self-criticism. Research is then rethought not as an inquiry-on but as a communication that leads to the movement of both researchers and migrants. Research with migrant women seems to us to include dimensions of hospitality, consideration and contradiction. In contact with the life experience of migrants, research and researchers cannot remain in their unchanged territories.
