Abstract

In the nineteenth century, philanthropists rejected the laziness bonus instituted by the gift of no return, and advocated 'active charity'. Their science of indigence aims to hunt down the sloth of men and women that makes them sink into misery and hides behind the mask of poverty. This enterprise of morality is opposed by Lafargue for whom laziness is not a social crime, but the expression of class conflict.
