Abstract

Dans une lecture économique de la Doctrine sociale de l'Eglise, Bernard Laurent avance l'idée que, depuis Léon XIII, l'Eglise perpétue son opposition à un libéralisme économique sans limites, au pouvoir démesuré du " tout marché ". L'Eglise ne se contente pas de livrer un enseignement moral - actualisé en fonction des problèmes rencontrés - qui vise à éclairer les chrétiens pour favoriser leur discernement face aux questions rencontrées dans le monde économique et social. Elle défend une conception de l'homme qui la conduit à critiquer la société moderne dominée par la sphère marchande. Cette réserve s'inscrit dans la perpétuation de la tradition intransigeante, celle d'un catholicisme en délicatesse avec le système de valeurs issu des Lumières, tradition à laquelle Jean-Paul II a donné un nouveau souffle. Le renouveau des thèses libérales, tout autant que la situation économique de crise, rend davantage recevable une parole anti-moderne, anti-libérale, soucieuse avant tout de l'homme.
