Modelling trade in processed food products : a generalized Armington approach

Abstract

Le modèle d'Armington est un outil commode pour expliquer les échanges commerciaux. Ce modèle qui a été utilisé pour bon nombre de produits agricoles bruts a été, d'un côté, très peu appliqué aux échanges commerciaux de biens alimentaires transformés, mais a aussi été remis en cause en raison de ses hypothèses assez restrictives. Cet article a pour objet de présenter un modèle de différenciation des produits plus général, qui peut à la fois prendre en compte des structures non homothétiques des préférences du consommateur, mais aussi permet de tester des conditions de séparabilité. Ce modèle qui repose sur l'utilisation de la fonction "Constant Difference of Elasticities" (CDE) est appliqué aux importations françaises et à la consommation d'origine domestique de dix-neuf produits alimentaires transformés. Les résultats montrent un rejet fréquent du modèle d'Armington et l'acceptation de structures des préférences du consommateur moins restrictives.
