De quoi Plutus est-il le nom? Une allégorie de l'économie politique au XVIIIe siècle

Abstract

Aristophanes' Greek comedy _Ploutos_ was published in French for the first time in its entirety in 1684. Nearly 40 years later, Marc-Antoine Legrand wrote a new version of _Plutus_ based on that translation by Anne Dacier, to account for the economic situation in the 1720s and John Law's booming financial system. An other contemporary, the Marquis d'Argenson also noted how the Greek _Plutus_ translated by Dacier resonates with one of the founding texts of political economy, Bernard Mandeville's _Fable of the Bees_. This article sheds light on the links between both versions of _Plutus_ and the liberal economic ideology that gives new impetus to the European modernity at the dawn of the 18th century.
