Abstract

Le recours à l'évaluation chiffrée dans les entreprises privées comme dans le secteur public s'est accéléré avec la montée de la normalisation. Deux facteurs essentiels ont joué dans ce phénomène : d'une part, le déploiement des normes et des certifications depuis la création en 1947 de l'ISO, l'Organisation internationale de la normalisation, ONG qui encadre un réseau de 161 organismes nationaux, d'autre part, le renouveau du taylorisme à travers le toyotisme, une doctrine managériale issue des pratiques mises en place dans l'Après-guerre par une entreprise japonaise pour son activité automobile. Ce rapide tour d'horizon historique permettra de saisir le contexte dans lequel s'inscrit le renouveau de la standardisation. L'objet de ce texte n'est pas de décrire précisément les procédures d'évaluation chiffrée liées à la standardisation mais bien plutôt d'examiner ce que cela produit sur celles et ceux qui travaillent. Car le chiffre régente le travail dans les organisations contemporaines de façon sclérosante. Au quotidien, comment les individus qui ne sont pas les décideurs le vivent-ils ? L'analyse des stratégies de confrontation, de contournement ou détournement, de passivité face à l'évaluation va prendre appui sur une étude de cas atypique, la série télévisée étatsunienne qui a documenté cette évolution du travail, Sur écoute/The Wire produite par HBO entre 2002 et 2008.
