Abstract

The article deals with the new forms of cultural action that are multiplying and are often carried out by artistic organisations apart from the most recognised ones. A common feature of these practices is to give a central place to the people involved in an artistic process and to the cultures that constitute their own identity. It follows that projects or artistic events with people or specific audiences are always cogenerated, and that is a principle. This ethical and aesthetic bias knows a variety of aspects and also implies a plurality of criteria to value artistic processes. It echoes a changing context in our societies and their relation to art. These practices require cooperation between several types of actors and a long enough duration. They favour the ongoing relational process and all of them do not lead to the production of an achieved work that can be diffused outside the territory where the action was carried out. They imply specific responsibilities and skills from the artistic practitioners, including in terms of management and project economics. They would require a reorientation of public cultural subsidies and policies, (such as) along with changes in the current rules and professional organisation of the art world. The question also arises of coordinating processes involving different actors and stakes. These practices ultimately question less the future of contemporary art as it is instituted than, more broadly, the place, the function and regulation of art in our societies.
