Abstract

This article analyses the socioeconomic factors that influence the desire to adopt a green latrine. Using two econometric models applied to microdata from Dapaong, we highlight a number of new results. In particular, we show that the green latrine is popular among rural households seeking to increase the productivity of their land and their agricultural output. Social networks also play an important role. The privacy offered by the closed latrine influences the desire for its adoption. Finally, the close links among access to safe water, access to improved sanitation and the prevalence of waterborne diseases are highlighted.
