La croissance économique dans le long terme: S. Kuznets versus N.D. Kondratiev. Actualité d'une controverse apparue dans l'entre-deux-guerres

Abstract

Au cours de ces dernières années, le débat sur les cycles longs et les ressorts de la croissance a été relancé par un certain nombre de contributions empiriques qui, pour les unes, tendent à confirmer, pour les autres à infirmer, le bien-fondé des conclusions auxquelles étaient parvenus N.D. Kondratiev et S. Kuznets dans l'entre-deux-guerres. Partant des travaux menés par ces derniers sur la dynamique de longue période des économies capitalistes et des critiques qu'ils ont suscitées, cet article se propose de revenir sur leur actualité à l'aune des principaux résultats auxquels ont abouti les études qui ont été réalisées au cours des trois dernières décennies. Cette démarche nous conduira à avancer quelques éléments de réflexion au sujet d'une question qui fait toujours débat à l'époque contemporaine: qui avait raison, Kondratiev dans les années 1920 ou Kuznets en 1930 ?
