Le parétianisme, entre welfarisme et libéralisme ?

Abstract

Dans leur article, paru dans le numéro 66 des Cahiers d'économie politique, Berthonnet et Desreumaux (B&D) s'intéressent au statut du marché dans Social Choice and Individual Values (SCIV) et en particulier à l'impact du fameux théorème d'impossibilité d'Arrow sur ce statut. Ils insistent notamment sur le fait qu'à la fin de SCIV, le marché est un opérateur qui vise uniquement l'efficacité et qui ne peut pas, sous peine justement de se heurter au théorème d'impossibilité, prendre en compte les valeurs individuelles. Tout en partageant cette conclusion et sans prétendre la remettre en cause, il semble nécessaire de discuter un point fondamental de leur argumentation, à savoir l'importance qu'ils accordent à la liberté dans leur présentation de la démarche d'Arrow et, pour être encore plus précis, le rapprochement qu'ils opèrent entre parétianisme et libéralisme. Berthonnet et Desreumaux affirment en effet à de très nombreuses reprises qu'Arrow adopte dans SCIV une position « libérale », alors que ce dernier se situe de manière explicite dans la tradition welfariste.
