Abstract

The activities of all workers involve micro-decisions and choices that are extremely important for the work process. The objective of the present article is to address the problem of management from the point of view of the activity, i.e. beginning with the assumption that it is not only managers who guarantee the management of a hospital. Based on a description of a situation that occurred in November, 1997, at a nursing station in a university hospital, an example is provided of management activities carried out by nursing professionals during a night shift to deal with an unexpected situation. It is emphasized that management is related to les dramatiques d'usage de soi (the use of oneself in the dialectic debate regarding norms of work activity), wherein the values related to one's own health confront those related to patient care, in a context of understaffing due to restricted employment of personnel.
