Abstract

L'auteur développe une thèse à propos de l'hétérogénéité sociale de l'agriculture professionnelle actuelle : il y subsiste une petite paysannerie en situation de pauvreté chronique. Une diversité de formes d'existence est toutefois mise en évidence par les enquêtes. L'argumentation est construite autour des questions suivantes : comment peut-on classer les agriculteurs ? Une faible taille économique condamne-t-elle à vivre chroniquement dans une pauvreté relative ? Quelles sont les conditions de création et de renouvellement d'une telle frange sociale au sein d'une agriculture moderniste ? Quelles fonctions sociales y exerce-t-elle ? Autant d'occasions de saisir de larges pans des réalités agricoles : revenu, patrimoine, consommation, investissement, endettement, mais aussi formation scolaire et permanente, chances matrimoniales, exode, hérédité sociale, etc.
