Abstract

The French Revolution is traditionally presented as an essential moment in the definition of property rights and in the recognition of guarantees given to owners. However, in the last decades of the Ancien Régime, the State, while undertaking an ambitious road policy, had already laid the foundations for a compensation regime. The files examined by the administration refer to damages of different kinds. First, they concern cases of expropriation in the public interest as part of work undertaken for a road or bridge. Other forms of property damage, such as the lack of use of land occupied by material deposits or damaged during construction, are also likely to be financially repaired. The procedures then implemented make it possible to clarify the practical operations of estimating the value of expropriated or damaged property and the compensation arrangements for the owners concerned.
