Abstract

L'histoire de l'art du XXe siècle est jalonnée par un nombre vertigineux de manifestes. L'exposition des collections des Archives de la critique d'art cet automne 2011 au Cabinet du Livre d'Artiste (CLA) à Rennes est l'occasion de revenir sur une belle part de ces écrits à vocation programmatique. Genre littéraire aux contours flous, le manifeste forge une parole en action qui cherche l'immédiateté de sa réception. Si l'abondance des manifestes confirme l'importance qui leur est conférée par les artistes et critiques en tant qu'outils pour forger activement l'histoire, le retour à ces documents dévoile les motifs communs des affinités et des rejets, les aléas des cris de combat qui se croisent, se répètent et varient dans le temps.
