Damage control productivity : why econometrics matters

Abstract

Cet article consiste, d'une part, en une critique de l'approche de Lichtenberg et Zilberman (1986) pour l'explication de la "surestimation" habituelle de la productivité marginale des pesticides. Les auteurs montrent que l'argument, selon lequel les fonctions de production standard (Cobb-Douglas, translog...) ne seraient pas adéquates pour la modélisation de l'action des pesticides sur les rendements agricoles, n'est vraisemblablement valide que dans des cas très particuliers. D'autre part, on propose une autre explication potentielle de cette surestimation de la productivité marginale des pesticides : l'existence de biais d'hétérogénéité tels qu'ils ont été mis en évidence par Mundlak (1961). Ces discussions théoriques sont illustrées à l'aide d'estimations et de tests réalisés dans le cadre de la méthode des moments généralisée à partir d'un panel, issu du RICA, de 496 agriculteurs suivis de 1987 à 1990.
