Abstract

The jobs in first contact with a public, which include important organizational emotional requirements at work, require emotional labor as well, which compromises the well-being of both the individual and the working group. The police activity leaves the practitioners exposed in their individuality and requires from them some " acting " in front of a public that can sometimes be very difficult. How to manage the police activity's " backstage " in front of the weight of these emotional requirements? What is the role of the management and Human Resources (HR) function in structuring the practitioner and working group's " care " ? A case study led within a French anti-crime squad (Brigade anti-criminal-ité), triangulating data from an ethnography, from semi-directive and non-directive interviews , from participation in working groups and training sessions in partnership with a specialized police unit, reveals very interesting results about health and well-being at work. Both professionals from health and HR functions and managers must play a decisive role in this matter, through organizing and/or reorganizing the activity's " back-stage " .
