Abstract

La question de la soumission de la monnaie au politique doit être nuancée. Pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, les contraintes économiques et techniques furent prépondérantes. S'il existe des traces d'influence fasciste dans les monnaies conçues par Lucien Bazor sous l'État français en revanche les billets, dessinés par Lucien Jonas, montrent un parti pris de neutralité. Il est possible d'attribuer à Bazor la création iconographique de la francisque de Vichy. Cette dernière s'inspire à la fois des représentations numismatiques républicaines présentes depuis la Révolution française et de thèmes inspirés du fascisme italien. Bazor illustre aussi les conceptions politiques de Vichy dans une médaille montant un Ara Pacis européen. Lucien Jonas dont la plupart des billets sont conçus avant la guerre s'inspire d'oeuvres du patrimoine français et souhaite avant tout magnifier la grandeur de la France.
