Abstract

Depuis le début de l'année, on dispose de signaux contradictoires quant à l'évolution du chômage. D'une part, les demandeurs d'emploi en fin de mois (DEFM), tels que les enregistre l'Agence Nationale pour l'Emploi (ANPE), augmentent légèrement (DEFM 1, voir encadré pour les définitions) ou sont stables (DEFM 1+6). Compte tenu d'une population active qui continue à augmenter, le taux de chômage devrait être stable ou décroître modérément. L'institut européen de la statistique, Eurostat, produit une estimation du chômage qui va dans ce sens et, selon lui, le taux de chômage serait au mois d'août 2001 de 8,5 % de la population active (tableau 2) (...).
