How doctoral students are advised: Case studies from France, Ukraine and the United States

Abstract

The advising of doctoral students is a critical aspect of doctoral education; however there have been few studies of doctoral advising in Ukraine, France or the US. This article presents three case studies, describing how doctoral students are advised at three universities in Ukraine, France and the US. A description is given of a doctoral program in each nation, and current national changes that are effecting doctoral supervision. The findings show remarkable similarity in how doctoral faculty understand their roles, even when the systems are very different. Findings are compared to studies from other nations in Europe, Australia and the US. This is an exploratory study to compare supervision across nations and cannot be taken as comprehensive.
