Abstract

Le cas permet d'illustrer comment l'évolution de l'environnement économique peut remettre en cause de manière radicale les choix stratégiques de l'entreprise. LAFARGE saisit une opportunité d'investissement en faisant l'acquisition début 2008 d'ORASCOM CEMENT, un groupe cimentier égyptien avantageusement implanté en Afrique/Moyen Orient, zone où la demande est en forte croissance. Les retombées financières attendues de l'opération, tant sur le plan du développement de l'activité, des résultats et des flux de trésorerie, sont mises à mal dans les mois qui suivent par l'éclatement de la crise des subprimes. L'opportunité que constituait Orascom Cement se transforme ainsi en contrainte : le groupe, qui s'était lourdement endetté pour financer l'acquisition d'ORASCOM CEMENT, subit d'autant plus le contrecoup de la récession économique et doit adapter ses décisions d'investissement et de financement en conséquence, jusqu'à annoncer la cession de sa branche Plâtre en 2011.
