Abstract

L'objectif de cet article est de présenter l'analyse théorique des motivations et des déterminants de l'innovation technologique des firmes. Pour cette présentation, nous adoptons une stratégie d'exposition qui part du cadre le plus simple possible dans lequel l'innovation peut apparaître (l'économie de Robinson Crusoé) et qui aborde successivement des contextes économiques de plus en plus riches. La discussion est donc organisée selon une logique progressive, allant des motivations et des conditions purement individuelles des innovations (dans le cas du Robinson seul dans sur son île), vers le cas le plus complexe où les activités d'innovation ont lieu dans un cadre international, sous des institutions particulières selon les pays. Les étapes intermédiaires introduisent successivement les phénomènes économiques suivants : la demande, le fonctionnement en industrie, la concurrence, les pouvoirs publics, et, finalement, la concurrence internationale.
