Abstract

Anyone enquiring about "e-science" is bound to be led to a quotation from John Taylor's (2001) introductory description of this movement's essence as being "about global collaboration in key areas of science and the next generation of infrastructure that will enable it". Although much that has been written about e-science is occupied with the engineering and application of an enhanced technological infrastructure for the transmission, processing, and storing of digital data and information (Hey, 2005), this article steps back to consider other, non-technological requirements for attaining the ostensible goal of e-science programs -augmenting the scale and effectiveness of global collaboration in scientific research.
