Abstract

Les jeux Olympiques d'hiver sont l'occasion de revenir sur la figure fascinante de George Vancouver, le seul explorateur qui partit avec l'espoir de ne rien découvrir (et connut le bonheur de réussir...). A u milieu du XVIIIe siècle, la totalité des mers du globe a été explorée. La carte du monde est établie. Reste pourtant une seule inconnue : le nord ouest de la côte américaine, et une question majeure : existe-t-il un détroit permettant de passer d‟une côte à l‟autre du continent nord-américain et d‟éviter ainsi d‟avoir à passer le Cap Horn pour entrer dans le Pacifique ?
