« Un contre modèle de l'action : l'expérience selon Dewey

Abstract

Comme l'a noté Rorty (1993 : 176), redécrire l'expérience constitue aux yeux de Dewey le tout de la philosophie. Nulle part peut-être, Dewey n'a poussé plus loin ce programme que dans L'art comme expérience (pour la trad. française, Oeuvres philosophiques, Tome III, 2005), essentiellement dans le chapitre III intitulé : « Vivre une expérience », mais également un peu partout dans l'ouvrage. Ce livre est déroutant. La caractérisation qu'en a faite Isenberg (1987, p. 128) est assez juste : « This book is a hodgepodge of conflicting methods and undisciplined speculations. Yet it is full of profound and stimulating suggestions. » Cet effet sur le lecteur est en réalité lié à la démarche même de Dewey. Visant à analyser l'expérience, Dewey veut le faire en considérant celle-ci comme un tout.
