Abstract

A Strasbourg, l'histoire mondiale se mêle étroitement à l'histoire de l'institution universitaire. Entre 1872 et 1945, trois universités de vainqueurs s'y succèdent en faisant table rase du système précédent. Après la défaite de 1870, l'empire de Guillaume 1e instaure une université modèle liant étroitement enseignement et recherche. L'Alsace reconquise en 1918, la France ne lésine pas non plus sur les moyens pour créer une université bien française, qui fait pourtant le pari de conserver le meilleur du système allemand. En 1939, elle se replie à Clermont-Ferrand, continuant ses activités, entre science et résistance. L'Alsace est annexée de fait et, en 1941, les Allemands installent à Strasbourg une université nationale-socialiste - qui, notamment, sera à l'origine de terrifiantes expérimentations médicales au camp du Struthof. Réalisé par des historiens des sciences allemands, français, américains et russes, ce livre propose un parcours passionnant et contrasté de la pratique des sciences en Alsace de 1872 à 1945.
