Abstract

A propos de Social Mechanisms (Hedström et Swedberg, 1998). Quels types de résultats théoriques peut-on attendre d'une recherche en sciences sociales, par exemple en gestion, qui adopte une démarche qualitative et n'entend rester, ni au stade de la monographie descriptive, ni au stade de l'explication historique comme succession d'événements contingents ? Il y a sans doute plusieurs réponses possibles. Mais probablement en nombre très limité. On peut penser à des typologies ; à des scénarios (dans la tradition de l'économie autrichienne) ; ou à des analyses en termes de mécanismes. Nous nous intéresserons ici au dernier point. Comme l'a écrit Jon Elster : « the basic concept in the social sciences should be that of a mechanism rather than a theory ».
