Abstract

# Since 2002, Russian metallurgical firms have been investing abroad. Taking advantage of the favorable economic climate in the sector, they have set up plants in both peripheral and core countries of the world economy. How far does this phenomenon, which is symptomatic of the development of multinational corporations originating from emerging countries, reach? This institutional, systemic perspective presents three sorts of determinants of internationalization: growth based on the company's own resources, the quest for competitive advantages so as to improve the firm's position in relation to its international rivals, and a complex interaction with those who wield political power in Russia.
