Insécurité économique et décisions de fécondité en France et en Hongrie

Abstract

How economic insecurity impact on fertility has been a major issue for demographers in their attempt to explain the decline in fertility rates. This paper suggests analyzing this relationship from a comparative and qualitative perspective. The analysis compares the arguments developed by respondents to a qualitative survey in France and Hungary, two contrasted countries regarding fertility rates. About forty people in each country, men and women, aged from 27 to 35 years, living in couple or alone were interviewed with a similar grid of questions. The main hypothesis was that the impact of economic insecurity on fertility decisions depends on the institutional frame and especially on the availability and quality of policies supporting parenthood. The findings confirm the hypothesis, stressing also on the importance of trust in these policies, which is highly dependent on the coherence and continuity of policies.
