Abstract

Box and Whiskers Plot for Developing StatisticalSensitivity. The Box & Whiskers Plot is an invention of Tukey (1977) for schematic representation of a distribution. This graphic representation can serve as a means of familiarization with abstract statistical concepts. In this article, we examine the need to rethink initiation to statistics and base our work on new knowledge in neuron sciences which propose placing the student in a situation of discovery, while using real data and Exploratory Data Analysis computer programs. In the second part of this article, we explain in detail how to interpret box and whiskers plots, and show how students can discover, while exploring data, certain properties of the median and the means. In the references, we provide Internet addresses for further work with box and whiskers plots. This article is intended for faculty members and those who work with applied statistics.
