Abstract

Internal Labor Markets and Manpower Analysis (Doeringer and Piore, 1971) stays a fundamental reference for any study in terms of internal labor markets or labor market segmentation. This book set the grounds for a renewal in economic theory regarding the understanding of employment management policies.Piore's subsequent work further developed the main concepts at play. He first focused on the forces responsible for the existence of internal labor markets. Going upward the causality chain, in 1980, he finally based his rationale on the type of demand faced by a firm. The transformation of labor market structure during the 80s also constituted an important object of study. Piore's analysis is focused on the idea of a fundamental rupture between the 70s and 80s. His interpretation led him to develop the concept of flexible specialization. On a theoretical basis, the consequences of these developments are important. They eventually call into question the concept of dualism itself.
