Abstract

This paper describes how the 1995/96 Family Expenditure Survey (FES) is used to produce three of the four datasets that act as microdata input for POLIMOD. Variables used by POLIMOD are defined in terms of the FES datasets which are available through MIMAS, the national computer service run by the University of Manchester. The structure of FES data is outlined in Section 1. The derivation of variables in the household-level dataset is described in Section 2. Variables in the family-level dataset are described in Section 3, and variables in the individual-level dataset are outlined in Section 4. The fourth dataset produced from the FES and used as POLIMOD input contains expenditure data for the household and is described elsewhere.
