El modelo económico y la cuestión social

Abstract

En este artículo hay una revisión de la discusión conceptual respecto a la interrelación entre mercado y desigualdad. ¿El sistema capitalista genera inevitablemente una distribución inequitativa? La meritocracia sería el argumento central para justificar dicha situación. Pero, ¿existe en Chile una sociedad meritocrática? ¿Hasta qué punto las condiciones iniciales condicionan la trayectoria individual de cada persona? ¿Cuál es la relación entre desigualdad y crecimiento económico? En el artículo se revisan los planteamientos positivos y negativos respecto de esta relación. Además, se examinan las siguientes interrogantes: ¿es la desigualdad del ingreso un problema ético?, ¿cuánta desigualdad puede tolerar una sociedad?. Por último, se revisa el papel que ha desempeñado el Estado de Bienestar y se sugiere su sustitución por un Estado Integrador, cuyo principio orientador básico lo constituye la igualdad de oportunidades.
