Abstract

Assuming that the environmental quality of a good is determined by the pollution intensity of its production technique, this paper presents an intra-industry trade model of varieties of a good which differ in environmental quality. Once the model is specified, we analyse the effects of different environmental and trade policies, as well as the level and the distribution of income differences, on the specialization pattern, the volume of trade, and the environmental quality of products. Moreover, this paper proves that the intra-industrial specialization that follows a trade liberalization process may be explained by environmental regulation differences between countries.
