Abstract

Este trabajo pretende ser una historia del desempleo en España en el último cuarto del siglo XX, cuando el paro creció hasta afectar a casi una cuarta parte de la población activa. De hecho, más que una historia convencional, quiere ser una interpretación del fracaso del mercado de trabajo como institución social, de la que se espera que pueda ofrecer a cada ciudadano que lo desee una ocupación con una remuneración adecuada, y a cada empresa los empleados que necesite, de modo que se consiga, en el corto plazo, el pleno empleo y, en el largo plazo, una tasa de crecimiento económico capaz de proporcionar a la población un nivel de vida creciente y razonablemente seguro.
