Abstract

The poor neighbourhoods of Antananarivo present an amalgamation of all urban ills: threat of flooding during the rainy season, overcrowded living conditions, almost complete lack of access to running water, frequent problems of drugs and violence, bad reputation, etc. These negative aspects are all the more likely to have an impact on the well-being and social trajectories of the adults who live in these areas since they were often born there and stay there as if imprisoned. However, the people living in these areas do not want to move and even frequently express the wish to remain in their neighbourhood. To identify the reasons underlying this attachment to an area, the work presented here uses the data supplied by a representative survey carried out in Antananarivo in 2003 on a sample of 2,807 individuals from different households. The results of the statistical analysis show that despite the many handicaps to be found in the poor neighbourhoods, people have a sense of belonging there that provides them with a common identity. This is all the more important since they lack other means of establishing their social identity.
