Abstract

***** School violence has received widespread attention in recent years, partly due to our current knowledge that it can have serious consequences for those involved. One of the most reliable sources of information on this topic in Latin America is the study on school violence held in Bogota in 2006 and 2011. This study included the measurement of multiple indicators related to aggression and violence in public and private schools. In 2006 more than 87.000 students were involved, and in 2011 more than 100.000 students from 19 of the 20 localities of Bogotá participated. Given that both applications used the same instrument, this publication provides a contrast that identifies how much has school violence changed in five years in Bogotá according to 12 key indicators. The results indicate a clear decrease in homophobic attitudes and bullying, but also a worrying increase in gang membership, drug use, carrying weapons and theft among students in Bogota. Detailed information (by locality, grade, gender and type of school) presented here suggests public policies that could explain the progress identified, but also highlights topics where comprehensive and urgent measures are required in order to prevent further deterioration of school violence in the future.
