Abstract

***** By using several sources of information we conducted an analysis of the situation of stroke in Colombia since 2011. Stroke is one of the leading causes of mortality and disability in Colombia. The group of the population that most receive medical treatment and die for this condition are those over the age of 50 and with a low educational attainment. In relative terms, there is a high mortality associated with stroke in the departments of the periphery of the country. The analysis suggests the need to have in the country more health services providers that can offer access to computerized axial tomography. Likewise, the country needs more health centers that perform specific reperfusion therapies for ischemic stroke, because after the event these patients have a window of approximately six hours to receive medical attention and avoid having a permanent disability or die. Given more than 90% of patients who died from stroke received medical attention during the process that led to their death, it is important to enhance the quality of the services provided to patients, as well as, to expand the offer of services necessary for the care of people with stroke.
