Los censos de población: ¿Entre la ortodoxia y la alternatividad?

Abstract

La mayoría de los países reconocen la pertinencia de los censos y han buscado aminorar los costos apropiando nuevas tecnologías sin desvirtuar la calidad de la información. América Latina ha ido incorporando paulatinamente cambios metodológicos y ha seguido de cerca las propuestas alternativas que vienen formulando Francia y Estados Unidos pero considera que sus sistemas estadísticos deben fortalecerse antes de dar un giro a las metodologías censales. Colombia ha introducido cambios sustanciales en aspectos conceptuales y operativos del Censo General 2005. El artículo reconstruye la historia censal reciente del país y analiza parte de esos cambios alertando sobre sus riesgos, conocidos o potenciales.
