Abstract

******* This paper presents some alternative methodologies to estimate the prevalence of a sensible characteristic in a finite population during the data collection, data processing, the estimation and the analysis stage of a survey. Standard procedures assume that the collected information is an accurate reflection of the opinion or state of the interviewee. However, this assumption is dubious when asking about a sensible question. Some of this type of questions is, for example, illegal activities, socially undesirable attitudes, opinion about individuals above in a hierarchy, embarrassing behaviours or questions, among many others. Three alternative methodologies are presented in order to protect the confidentiality of a particular interviewee. They will allow us to get an accurate answer that reflects the real opinion or state of a set of individuals in a sample. At the end, some methodological implications are discussed for these three methods highlighting their advantages and shortcomings.
