¿Por que los ninos abandonan la escuela? Determinantes de la desercion estudiantil en los colegios oficiales de Cartagena de Indias

Abstract

El estudio analiza los factores asociados a la desercion escolar en el distrito de Cartagena y dos estudios de caso correspondientes a las instituciones educativas San Felipe Neri y Tecnica Agropecuaria La Boquilla. Se incluyen variables de análisis relacionadas con las caracteristicas individuales, socioeconomicas, academicas e institucionales de los estudiantes matriculados en el sector oficial como determinantes de esta situación.La informacion utilizada fue suministrada por la Division de Cobertura Educativa de la Secretaria de Educacion Distrital de Cartagena, correspondiente al ano 2006. Para la estimacion de los factores se utilizo un modelo probit y los coeficientes se estimaron a traves del metodo de maxima verosimilitud; estos permiten analizar los efectos marginales sobre cual es la incidencia en la probabilidad de desercion escolar de cada una de las variables independientes. De acuerdo con los resultados, los factores academicos explican en una mayor proporcion la probabilidad de desercion en el distrito de Cartagena, lo cual es coherente con las estimaciones a nivel de las instituciones educativas.
