RESUMEN El objetivo de ese trabajo es obtener una mejor comprensión de cómo la liberalización comercial ha influido en el patrón de comercio de los países miembros del MERCOSUR. Considerando la expansión del comercio intraregional, se avalúa la posibilidad de la existencia de desviación de comercio como un resultado de la eliminación de tarifas. Para ello, se utilizan datos sobre los flujos de comercio bilateral intra y extra regional de las décadas 80, 90 y principios de los 2000, se analiza la estructura de exportación del bloque y se construye el índice de ventaja comparativa revelada para algunas industrias. Se obtiene que el sistema de preferencias comerciales estimula el comercio intraregional, pero no se puede deducir desviación de comercio. Por otro lado, el índice muestra una reorganización del comercio intraregional y una reducción mínima en el volumen total comercializado extraregional. ABSTRACT The objective of this paper is to obtain a better understanding of how commercial liberalization has influenced the pattern of trade of MERCOSUR country members. Considering the expansion of the intraregional trade, the possibility of existence of trade diversion as a result of the elimination of tariffs is estimated. For this purpose, data on the flows of bilateral trade intra and extraregional of 80’s and 90’s are used and indices of revealed comparative advantage (RCA) for some selected industries are constructed. The results confirm that the system of commercial preferences has stimulated the trade intra-MERCOSUR, but it is not possible to conclude the existence of trade diversion for the block as a whole. The RCAs show a reorganization of the intraregional trade and the reductions in the total volume commercialized extraregional were hardly significant in the period.
