Improved Age Information for ASM Establishments

Abstract

This CES Technical Note describes an effort to use the LBD (Longitudinal Business Database) to improve age data for ASM (Annual Survey of Manufactures) establishments. The output is a version of the ASMLONG file produced at CES by Jim Monahan called ASMLONG_AGE. This file has both PPN and LBDNUM longitudinal identifiers as well as information on the first and last years establishments appear in both the ASMLONG and LBD files. By using information from the LBD, I am able to substantially improve the quality of plant age information in the ASM. In particular, I can compute the “true†birth year for nearly 60% of all establishments ever in the ASM since 1963. Matching the LBD to the ASMLONG file was not trivial. Therefore, this note also discusses general procedures for matching the LBD to other CES establishment level micro datasets.
